Eric Carey draws upon his extensive experience to offer unique insights and a balanced perspective. Distinguished for his ability to recognize and nurture talent, he has mentored young people who are now respected conservation leaders making valuable contributions to their organizations and country.
Formally serving as the Executive Director of the Bahamas National Trust (BNT), the national parks management agency in The Bahamas. Eric redefined the BNT Brand so that it is now recognized by all walks of society as the leading environmental organization in The Bahamas and one of the most successful in the Caribbean. He secured increased funding for the national park system at least three-fold.
Under his leadership, the BNT was transformed from a small 10-person organization to a strategically managed organization with over 90 employees, on 7 islands. He oversaw operational improvements at key national parks. Thus, in 2018 the Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park was awarded the prestigious Platinum Blue Park Award which recognizes marine protected areas around the world that meet rigorous science-based standards for effectiveness.
A University of The West Indies graduate, Eric began his career at the Ministry of Agriculture, as a Wildlife Conservation Officer. He has also served as Parks Partnership Coordinator, Bahamas National Trust/The Nature Conservancy, and Director of Parks and Science with the Bahamas National Trust. He has received extensive training in wildlife conservation and nonprofit management and has represented The Bahamas at many international meetings. He has presented at various conferences throughout the Caribbean, Europe, and the United States, including at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. Eric is co-author of peer-reviewed publications on the Kirtland’s Warbler and on Plant Conservation in The Bahamas. He has been awarded the Partners-In-Flight International Conservation Award (1999); Wings Across the Americas National Award for Outstanding Achievement in Bird Conservation (2005) and the College of The Bahamas Alumni Hall of Fame Award (2015). Eric is a family man and enjoys spending time with his wife and two sons.
